LONG BEACH, CA – Former Edgefield resident Betty Mathis Whitlock, 74, died March 22 in Long Beach, California. This week her daughters placed a monument at Big Steven’s Creek Baptist Church, where Betty joins her kin in the Briggs and the Mathis burial site.
Although Betty, her mother, Nell (Briggs) Alger, and her Grandmother, Mary Ellen Briggs, settled in Southern California, they preserved their deep regard for South Carolina.
Betty is survived by her daughters, Leslie Crane (husband Donald); Laura Mandas (husband James); Leta McLaughlin (husband Patrick). She was predeceased by her daughter, Libra Whitlock, who died at 15 years old.
Betty was a devoted grandmother to Kayla (15) and Connor (13) Mandas; Alexander (14) and John (11) McLaughlin; and Alexander Crane (14).
Betty will be remembered for her kind spirit, loving heart and gentle soul.
