JOHNSTON, S.C. – Memorial services for James Watson Rhodes will be held at 11:00 AM Saturday, July 28, 2012, at Philippi Baptist Church, Johnston, South Carolina. Mr. Rhodes died at University Hospital on Thursday, July 26, 2012. Interment will be private at Sunset Gardens Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Friday, July 27, 2012 from 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Bland Funeral Home.
Born in Johnston, South Carolina on June 13, 1941, he was the son of the late Otis Langdon Rhodes and Sadie Lee Watson Rhodes Lowman.
For 38 years he and his partner owned and operated P & H Auto Supply in Johnston, S. C. After his retirement he enjoyed gardening, traveling, and spending time with his family.
Mr. Rhodes was a past member and officer of the Johnston Sertoma Club and the Johnston Merchants Association. He served for more than 25 years pulling the chain markers for the Strom Thurmond High School football team. He served on the boards of the Johnston Development Board and the Upper Savannah Council of Governments . Mr. Rhodes served for many years as an Edgefield County Representative for Clemson University IPTAY.
In 1996 he received the first Edgefield County Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year Award and in 2001 he received the Johnston Development Board Outstanding Volunteer Award.
Mr. Rhodes is survived by his wife, Doris Thomas Rhodes; children Jennifer Rhodes Sexton, Johnston, S. C. and Jason Thomas Rhodes (Kelli), North Augusta, S. C.; grandchildren Hannah Bayleigh Sexton, Emma Grace Sexton, Thomas Hogan Rhodes, Alissa Claire Rhodes; and brother, Coy Lee Lowman of Aiken, S. C.
