MILLEN, Ga. – Delores Elise Shuman Thompson, fondly known as “Neent-Neent” by her family, passed away on Tuesday, May 05, 2015 after a short battle with lung cancer. She was 70 years old.
Delores was predeceased by her father, Ivy Lee Shuman; her mother, Elise Howard Aldrich; her stepfather, Johnny Aldrich; and her husband, George B. Thompson, III. She is survived by her daughter, Shari (Sharon Lee) Huiet and her husband, Bucky, of Trenton, South Carolina; her son, Benjy (George Benjamin) Thompson and his wife, Delaine, of Statesboro, Georgia; her three grandchildren, Ivy Claire Collum Huiet, Lucas Benjamin Thompson, and Sarah Kate Thompson; her brother, Dr. Nicky (Ivy L.) Shuman and his wife, Sharon, of Statesboro, Georgia; her longtime friend, Randall Scott; and her faithful employee, “Cousin” Robert McClain.
Delores was small in stature, but large in spirit, tough and resilient. When faced with raising two young children alone, her natural talents for entrepreneurship, inherited from her father, led her to a successful real estate career. Delores was also a most generous person, quick to help those in need. She was especially helpful and proud of those who worked hard to provide better lives for their children, probably because it reminded her of the hardships found in her commitment to her own children.
Delores loved her friends and her children, and had a special and deep love for her grandchildren. In fact, revealing her good character and loving nature, she had a great appreciation for small children and dogs, probably because children and dogs were like her, always happy and looking on the bright side of things. She was a natural and patient teacher, and worked hard to help others become self-sufficient. She enjoyed antiquing, planting flowers, and decorating, and was famous for “finding a deal” of any kind. She was very sharp and quick-witted, traits that were passed along to her children and grandchildren.
She leaves behind two adoring and thankful children, three grandchildren, and scores of friends who will miss her but look forward to seeing her again soon.
A graveside service will be held at 3 PM at Clito Baptist Church. The family is hosting a reception in Delores’s honor from 5 to 7 PM on Thursday, May 7th at her home on 629 North Masonic Street in Millen. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you take the time to love the children in your lives, and to consider a donation to Ogeechee Area Hospice.
