Two shots were heard coming from the Mims/Gary Street area of Edgefield, Tuesday afternoon, Apr. 28, around 5:30. Officers with the Edgefield City Police Department were dispatched to the area with instructions to be on the look out for a white truck with rims that was thought to have been involved in the shots being fired. Deputies with the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office also assisted in the search for the vehicle.

Shortly after the search began, an ECSO deputy observed a vehicle matching the wanted truck’s description turning onto Rabbit Trail in Edgefield from Augusta Road. In an ECSO report detailing the incident, after turning onto Rabbit Trail, the truck sped up before finally pulling over at a wooded area on the roadway and coming to a stop. The three men in the vehicle were then detained as officers from the EPD responded to the scene. It was ascertained that at least one of the male passengers was suspected of being involved in the shots that were fired in the town. It was also determined that the driver of the vehicle was driving while under suspension. At least one of the passengers was found to have an outstanding warrant for his arrest in North Augusta. That man and the one suspected of being involved in the shots that were fired were taken into custody by the EPD. The driver was issued a citation for driving under suspension for property taxes. One firearm was found in the vehicle.

According to EPD Chief Ronnie Carter, who spoke to The Advertiser, Wednesday, the shots were determined to have been fired into the air, and there were no reported injuries as a result of those shots. The man suspected of firing those shots has been charged with possession of a stolen firearm and discharging a firearm within the city. Carter said the investigation into this matter is ongoing and more charges are possible.
