WASHINGTON, D.C. – Chalmers Carr, President/CEO of Titan Farms, SC’s largest peach grower and a major state and national agriculture leader, participated Tuesday in a panel discussion at the National Press Club in Washington, DC followed by a conference call with state and national reporters.
The purpose of the panel and call was to discuss the negative effect outdated US immigration policy has on the US agriculture industry and the nation’s economy as revealed in a report released today that shows American families are eating more imported fresh produce today than ever before, in substantial part because U.S. fresh produce growers lack enough labor to expand their production and compete with foreign importers.

The report, “No Longer Home Grown: How Labor Shortages are Increasing America’s Reliance on Imported Fresh Produce and Slowing U.S. Economic Growth” was compiled by Steven Broners, Ph.D., a Senior Economist at Welch Consulting and released by the Partnership for a New American Economy and the Agriculture Coalition for Immigration Reform.
