SALUDA – Funeral Services for Mr. James Keller (Jack) Dowd, Sr., will be held at 12 noon on Wednesday, March 30, at Bland Funeral Home Chapel, Johnston. The family will receive friends prior to the service at the funeral home from 11-12. Burial will follow in Mt of Olives Cemetery.
Mr. Dowd, a native of Johnston, SC, died at Saluda Nursing Center on March 26, 2016. He was a son of the late George Herman and Thelma Lorick Dowd. Having been employed by The Ridge Citizen, a local newspaper for many years, he was later employed by the Augusta Chronicle where he worked until moving his family to Fountain Inn, S.C. where he was employed by Dowd Construction Company. Upon moving to Columbia in 1971, he and his brother, Mickey, were co-owners of Mickey Dowd Incorporated Capital Typesetters which grew into Colorsep where they were very successful in their endeavors. He began his career in another direction when he became Supervisor of Operations for the printing department of The South Carolina Credit Union League. He enjoyed this adventure until his retirement in 1997. Jack was a council member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Johnston, SC, an Honorably Discharged member of the United States National Guard, and a Master Mason.
Mr. Dowd was a passionate lover of his John Deer tractor which provided him much enjoyment in both the yard but mostly sharing the “rides” with his grandchildren. He was very loving to his family who often drew their strength from him, and was devoted to his God and his church family. His physical loss will be greatly missed by everyone who knew him; however, we know his spirit lives on in our hearts forever and we celebrate his life because of his love of his God and know he reigns with Him.
Survivors include his wife: Joanne Stone Dowd; son: James K (Jimmy) Dowd, Jr. (Linda) of Murrells Inlet, SC; daughter: Lynette Dowd Rinker (Mark) of Cornelius, N.C.; grandchildren: (his most treasured loves of his life): Casey Lorick Lown Martin (Eric), Victoria Grace and David Hamilton Rinker; great grandchildren: Whitney Grace and Madalyn Quine Martin and many loving nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three brothers: George Herman Dowd, Jr., Grover Cleveland Dowd and Gordon Stanley (Mickey) Dowd, Sr.
