Local rising 8th and 9th grade students received instruction this past week in the classroom and on the shotgun range as part of the First Annual Strom Thurmond CTC Sporting Clays Summer Shooting Clinic. The Strom Thurmond CTC Sporting Clays Team along with its coaching staff hosted the three day shotgun shooting sports clinic Wednesday and Thursday at the Strom Thurmond Career and Technology Center with Friday’s activities taking place at the new Palmetto Shooting Complex in Edgefield.
“It really means a lot that these young people are willing to take the time out of their summer to come back and allow me come out and teach them about the shooting sports that we offer here at the Career and Technology Center, “said Jeremy Brooks, head coach for the Strom Thurmond CTC Sporting Clays Team.
The three day shooting clinic taught participants the importance of firearm safety. All participants began the clinic by taking and passing the South Carolina Hunters Education Program. Participants then learned how to properly maintain and clean various types of shotguns ranging from semi-automatic to pump to break action. The students were then taught skills in master eye, shooting stance, and firearm fit. Rounding out their second day in the classroom the students were taught the basic rules and etiquette to play the shotgun games of American Trap, Skeet, and Sporting Clays to prepare them for the final day of the clinic which was shooting trap, skeet and sporting clays at the Palmetto Shooting Complex on Friday.
“The students are showing a lot of interest and talent today on the courses” according to Greg Kelly “and we are already looking forward to having these shooters try out for our team in the fall.”
