A thirty-two year old Edgefield County man with down syndrome that went missing from his North Martintown Road home around 2:00 Wednesday afternoon, Nov. 19, was located by the Edgefield County Sheriff’s Office shortly before nightfall Wednesday evening.
The ECSO canine tracking team as well as other deputies from the ECSO, the SC Department of Natural Resources, a helicopter from the SC Law Enforcement Division, and concerned family and neighbors scoured the nearby roads and woods during the nearly four hours he was missing looking for the man. However, it was a tip to the ECSO of a person walking down Hwy 23 toward the town of Edgefield that led to the ECSO finding the young man around the Dead Man’s curve area.
The man, who was returned home, was cold, hungry, and thirsty and had some cuts and scratches due to his traveling through the woods, but appeared to be in good condition. He was accessed by EMS at his home as a precaution, however, none of his injuries required their assistance.
