McCORMICK, S.C. – Mrs. Jessie Whatley Gilchrist, 98, of 16 Creek River Lane, the widow of James Gilchrist, died on Monday morning, October 27, 2014, in Edgefield County Hospital. She was born in Edgefield County, daughter of the late Frank and Martha Ann Settles Whatley. She was a member of the Liberty Spring Baptist Church. She was the last survivor of her immediate family. She is survived by: one daughter, Janie Moton, McCormick, SC; three sons, Willie (Janie) Gilchrist and Frank (Mamie) Gilchrist, both of McCormick, SC, and John H. Gilchrist of Pulaski, GA; 16 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren and great-great-great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and sorrowing friends.
Funeral services were held 12 p.m. Thursday, October 30, 2 at Liberty Spring Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Jimmy Gilchrist, with Rev. Henry Merriweather presiding and assisted by Rev. Ronnie Gilchrist and others. Burial followed in the church cemetery. The body was placed in the church at 11 a.m. Public viewing was held Wednesday, 1-8 p.m. at the funeral home. The family is at the home. Butler and Sons Funeral Home, Saluda, SC, assisted the Gilchrist family.
