LAUREL HILL, N.C. – Walter Gamewell Smith, Sr.,age 77, passed away at his home on Sunday, August 17, 2014. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 20, at the Sneads Grove United Methodist Church officiated by Rev. Lamar Smith and Rev. Gordon Caughill. Burial will follow in Hillside Memorial Park.
Walter was born February 14, 1937 in Edgefield County, South Carolina, son of the late Samuel Luther Smith and Ruth Berry Smith. He proudly served his country in the North Carolina National Guard. He was an auto mechanic, worked formerly with McLaurin-McArthur and was the owner and operator of The Auto Transmission Hospital. He served as a longtime faithful member of the Sneads Grove United Methodist Church. He loved spending time with his family and friends. He enjoyed field trialing Beagles, gardening, farming and going to sporting events with his family.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Doris C. Smith of their home; sons, Walter G. “Randy” Smith, Jr., (Ronica) of Braselton, GA, Brian Clark Smith of the home; brothers, Samuel L. Smith, Jr., (Harriett) of Wagener, SC and Clyde Smith (Anne) of Johnston, SC; sisters, Martha S. McGee of Beech Island, SC, Betty Ruth Fulbright of Johnston, SC; his grandson, Rylan Smith and a host of aunts, uncles, cousins and special friends.
Visitation will be from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, August 19th at Richard Boles Funeral Service.
