On Friday, November 8, one hundred twenty of Merriwether Elementary School’s 4th grade students honored our veterans with song and recognition during a forty-five minute program held in the cafeteria for all who came. Mrs. Bowen, the music teacher, lead the students in singing the “National Anthem,” “Armed Forces Medley,” and “God Bless the USA.”
Dr. Robert Williamson, the Director of Missions at the Edgefield Baptist Association, spoke about his experience during the Vietnam War. Strom Thurmond High School’s NJROTC opened up the program with the presentation of the flag while students read aloud about the meaning of the “Pledge of Allegiance” and the significance of items on the P.O.W. table. Veterans stood to be recognized as their branch of service’s hymn began. Overall, Merriwether Elementary was honored to recognize all veterans for their amazing service and sacrifice.
